The book of Obadiah is a short but powerful prophecy concerning Edom’s judgment and the ultimate triumph of God’s kingdom. Edom, descended from Esau, had become proud because of its perceived security, wisdom, strength and alliances, yet its pride was exposed through the way it responded to Judah’s suffering. Rather than helping their brother, Edom stood aloof, rejoiced over Jerusalem’s downfall, participated in its destruction and took advantage of its vulnerability. God therefore declares that Edom’s actions will return upon its own head, revealing that He sees injustice and will ultimately judge it righteously. Obadiah’s message does not end with judgment. The prophecy turns toward the Day of the LORD, when God will deliver His people, restore their inheritance, establish holiness and bring every earthly power under His rule. The book ultimately points beyond Edom’s downfall to the greater truth that human kingdoms are temporary, but God’s kingdom is eternal. Obadiah therefore calls us to reject pride, refuse indifference toward the suffering of others, trust God with justice, pursue holiness as people who have been delivered, and remain confident that “the kingdom shall be the LORD’s.”
