Prayer is one of the greatest privileges given to the believer; it is our direct line of communion with the Father. In Matthew 7:7–8, Jesus presents a simple yet profound invitation: Ask, Seek, Knock. These three actions describe a deepening relationship with God and an increasing persistence in prayer.
To ask is to express dependence on God; to acknowledge our need and humbly bring our requests before Him. To seek is to actively pursue His presence and will. And to knock is to persist with faith and holy boldness until the door of divine opportunity or revelation opens.
These are not one-time actions but ongoing postures of faith. Jesus reassures us that those who ask will receive, those who seek will find, and to those who knock, the door will be opened (Matthew 7:8). Through this process, we don’t just receive what we ask for, we are drawn closer to the One who provides.
To ask means to make a request or inquiry; it is acknowledging both our need and God’s sufficiency. Asking requires humility and faith, recognising that every good and perfect gift comes from above (James 1:17).
Often, we hesitate to pray because we think we lack the right words or spiritual eloquence. But Jesus simplifies it; just ask. Prayer begins not with performance, but with relationship. As children of God, we are invited to come freely and confidently before His throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16).
In our daily lives, asking is second nature; we ask for directions, clarity, and help. This is the same posture Jesus invites us to have before God.

To knock is to persist. It is the action of one who has already asked and sought but will not give up until the door opens. Knocking reflects perseverance in prayer and faith that God hears even when the answer seems delayed.
As Matthew Henry writes, “Knock, and it shall be opened; the door of mercy and grace shall no longer be shut against you as enemies and intruders, but opened to you as friends and children. If the door be not opened at the first knock, continue instant in prayer.”
Knocking symbolises persistence and trust. Jesus illustrated this through the parable of the persistent widow (Luke 18:1–8), showing that we “ought always to pray and not lose heart.” When we knock, we demonstrate faith that God will respond; not just by giving us what we ask for, but by revealing Himself through the process.
Those who knock don’t just receive an answer; they are welcomed into the presence of the One who answers. The ultimate reward of prayer is not the opened door, it is communion with the Father inside.
